How do you travel on an international flight with a great dane puppy?
Question by : How do you travel on an international flight with a great dane puppy?
I am looking into getting a great dane puppy from Italy, and i was wondering how you have the puppy on the plane with you. Not shipping it but like in the seat next to you. I havent been on a plane in 10 years and i know there are more requirements and even more when traveling internationally, but i just can’t think of things like where would the puppy go to the bathroom, do you give him sleeping pills and bring a pet carrier with puppy pads in the bottom, what if hes too big for a puppy carrier.
I just thought i’d get the information in advance so that i’d have everything all planned out before i go get him.
Thanks so much and ANYTHING you can think of would be helpful.

You are going to have to research airlines first off and see which ones will even allow this. The dog can’t go to the bathroom anywhere except in the carrier, so definitely make sure you put in puppy pads. Talk to a vet about a tranquilizer if you think it will be needed. Each airline has different requirements on what the carrier can or cannot be and they are very strict. Your best bet is not to be on here asking us, but to be looking at the airline carrier and asking them each about their separate requirements. Everything varies between the airlines, and it can cost a lot of money to do. Make sure the dog is comfortable in the carrier, and know you won’t be able to open that carrier for the entire plane ride even if the dog is allowed up next to you.

Dog’s can’t fly in the passenger cabin unless they’re a service dog, or can fit in a carrier stored under the seat in front of you. It would have to go as cargo
It goes in CARGO!
Crated.
Sealed in…NOT watered or fed OR DRUGGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
&w/a a health cert from a vet & 2 “coop cups” & absorbent bedding
CALL the pros at the airline for all details.
He isn’t going to be in the plane with you. A Great Dane is too big to fit under the seat and most airlines don’t allow pets in the cabin for international flights anyway.
He will need a suitable sized crate that is airline approved. This usually means that it is solid with a metal door and vents in the other 3 sides. It would need to have a rim so that if it is next to another crate or a wall, the vents are not blocked. There are other regulations that you should be able to get from the airline or a quick google search.
The crate will need to be big enough for him to stand up and turn around, you can go a bit bigger if you want. Put something absorbent in the bottom wit ha towel on top. You need to attach food and water dishes inside the crate. Most also require “Live Animal” stickers and up arrows. Put your info on the crate as well just in case. Taping some food is also a good idea in case of a layover.
Do not give him any sedative. These are not really all that safe especially at the lower pressure in a plane. He will need to be aware of what is going on so he can brace himself and regulate is temperature.
You will need to make sure he pees and poops before you load him in the crate. Most airports have a small area fro dogs to do this. Most airlines require them to have food and water before the flight, but not in the carrier.
A very important thing to look into in the regulations for the country you are bringing him. Some require certain vaccinations or a quarantine period. Some make it so your puppies have trouble getting in based on rabies vacines and the time it takes to be effective. Make sure you have all the paperwork in order before you leave.
I doubt that you will be able to bring the puppy on the plane with you unless he will fit under the seat in a secure soft crate but you could check the different airlines and see what their requirements are. You will not be able to take him out to potty so I would think he would be more comfortable in a solid crate in cargo that is big enough for him to stand and turn around and lay down comfortably. I know this isn’t what you want to do but he isn’t a small dog even as a puppy. Most air lines have a minimum age they will ship a pup.Puppies tend to just curl up and go to sleep so he should be fine.Do not feed him the day you leave and instead of giving water that he will spill give him ice cubs in his water dish. They will slowly melt and he will have water.
Your vet. or the airline should be able to tell you what is required to bring the pup into th U.S. I have no doubt the pup will need a health certificate from the breeders vet. and should not be more than 10 day before you leave with pup or it will be invalid. I’m not sure if the U.S. has a quarantine period so you need to check. You need to consider the time of the year you will be traveling. Most airlines will not fly animals if it is summer and to hot or winter and to cold so your timing needs to be right. The airline should be able to help you with any questions you have. Good Luck
a great dane puppy will have to travel in cargo. airline regulations state that any animal must fit in a carrier under the seat in front of you in order to be in the passenger area of the plane. You cannot buy a seat for your puppy. You cannot sedate him- it is very dangerous for him. He pees and poops in his crate- he’s got no place else to go and you simply clean him up when you pick him up in baggage. Depending on where you are importing him to you may need a broker. The breeder in Italy should know what to do but call the airline directly and get their instructions.
