Hi everyone. I’m bringing my dog (shih tzu) on the plane with me. But I want to know the exact procedures so I don’t get any surprises at the airport. I will be travelling from Canada to the US via American Airlines. I’ve checked with the airline about the prices and everything.. But what I want to know is when I check in with my bags and all, do they take my dog from me? Will I be only getting him back on the plane? Or do I carry him with me throughout the entire time (security check and all) until I get on the plane? So he’s a small dog, which will be able to fit under the seat in front of me. But what if he needs to eat? The airline doesnt allow him to eat? (They say my dog needs to be inside the carrier at all times during the flight.) And what if he pees? I need to clean him!
I’d really appreciate answers . . . especially from people who’ve already travelled with their pups on AA. Thanks a lot in advance!

You have to arrange it ahead of time, there’s a fee with American. AA made me keep the carrier under the seat during the flight. It aggrivated me (it was a Yorkie).
When going thru security you have to remove the pet from the carrier and send the carrier thru x-ray. I had the vet prescribe a mild sedative since my dog way pretty anxious during travel anyway. Yours may or may not be willing to do so.

your dog has to be in the carrier. you can give him treats and water, but remember, what goes in, must come out. They don’t make it easy because they really don’t want animals on the plane. You will carry him on board with you, but even while your waiting to board he must be in carrier. I have seen people get escorted out of the airport in both Atlanta and O’Hara without a warning. I have to ask, why the heck would you subject your pet to this? Are you moving, or just selfish?
Lastly, don’t expect any sympathy from other passengers, they don’t want your pet on board either. Flying is very stressful now-a-days to allot of folks.
um, make sure there is no restriction flying from Canada into the US with the dog. Such as a quarantine. Then ask the airlines. Are you sure American allows pets to fly in the cabin?
