Q&A: Is traveling in a backpack bad for my dog?
Question by Scubahood: Is traveling in a backpack bad for my dog?
My little miniature pinscher is starting to slow down and the winters are cold here and he’s never really coped well with the cold.
He loves to come everywhere with me and I sometimes have him in a carrier but I’ve recently started putting a blanket in a regular backpack and carrying him in there. It’s great because he loves it, it keeps him warm in the winter and I’m able to ride my bike with him.
What I want to know though, is it okay for him physically to sit wrapped up in one position while traveling? He can only really move his head. I know he loves it but I’m worried it could be bad for his joints or something.
any thoughts?
haha.. yeah it’s open for sure.. it has clips to keep the zipper from opening all the way and him falling out but if he really wanted to squirm out he could .. i think he just has more sense then that

As long as he is not in there for a long duration, he has some wiggle room, and he is getting enough air (must be pretty well ventilated), then yes it’s fine. Of course there are some dangers, but overall as long as you monitor him you should be fine.
Let him stretch his legs every so often, but otherwise, he’ll be fine. The image of a little min pin head poking out of a backpack makes me smile. It’s open a little bit, right? Because it needs to be, for light and ventilation. So sweet of you to take your dog with you on bike rides, and worry that he’s warm enough in his old age.
Wonderful Idea!
Bet the little chap enjoys every minute of it.
I`m sure he would let you know if he was uncomfortable in his cocoon.
I have a cheap form of transportation using my buddies electric bike scooters. They are handy to use for short trips.
